The Liberal Democrats are in Government for the first time, as part of the coalition, and we're delivering on as many of our election promises as possible.
The Pupil Premium
Liberal Democrats have always believed that education is the engine of social mobility, now we are making it happen.
The Government has now released the final Pupil Premium figures for every English local authority, constituency and school. Every school this year will receive an extra £488 for each child on free school meals they have on their roll. Schools in Broxtowe are getting an extra £684000 from the Pupil Premium to improve the education of the most disadvantaged children.
This is a real milestone for our party. The Pupil Premium is a policy we devised and campaigned for, and put at the heart of our Coalition negotiations. Now it is more than good policy, it is a reality making a difference to the school down your road. It goes directly into classrooms and will benefit all pupils. It is also a milestone in breaking the link between poverty and achievement, tackling Labour's shocking legacy where the richest 16-year olds are three times as likely to get five good GCSEs as the poorest.
Income Tax
We are committed to reducing income tax for the poorest in society. We are now well on the way towards taking an extra million people out of tax altogether and increasing the tax free allowance before people start paying income tax to £10,000.
Pensions
We have introduced the triple lock guarantee for pensions to make sure that pensioners in Britain receive a fair deal. We have restored the link between earnings and pensions, and thanks to the Liberal Democrats pensions will now go up each year by the highest of the average increase in earnings, the increase in the CPI or 2.5%. This is the most generous settlement that there has ever been for pensioners.
Setting Small Business Free
The Liberal Democrats are responsible for the Government committing itself to reducing the amount of regulatrion faced by small businesses. We aim to be the first Government ever to have reduced the administrative burden on business rather than increased it. We won;t get rid of rules just for the sake of them, as some play an important role, where where a requirement is unnecessary then we aim to get rid of it.
Parliamentary Spokesperson
Our current parliamentary spokesperson is David Watts, the leader of the Liberal Democrats on Broxtowe Borough Council. David contested the Broxtowe parliamentary seat at the 2001, 2005 and 2010 general elections, increasing the size and share of the Lib-Dem vote each time.
"It's great to hear the Tories complaining so much about the influence of the Liberal Democrats. This shows that we really are punching above our weight, and that we are managing to implement so much of our manifesto. Something like 75% of our manifesto has been or is being implemented. That's an excellent result on our part."
